We at C4 are overjoyed to share the story of Bunji, a young cassowary who has captured hearts across Queensland thanks to some media spotlight over the Christmas period. From his rescue as an orphaned chick to his new role as an ambassador at David Fleay Wildlife Park, Bunji’s journey is nothing short of miraculous.

Bunji’s story
Bunji was discovered on 25 June 2024 by Girringun Indigenous Rangers, orphaned on the roadside between Tully and Cardwell. Weak and unsteady, Bunji would not have survived on his own. After initial care by the Girringun Rangers and Tropical Vets, Bunji was brought to Garners Beach Cassowary Rehabilitation Centre, where dedicated teams from C4 and DES provided him with critical care.
Under the care of our volunteers, Bunji learned to eat and walk again, quickly showing signs of recovery by enjoying fallen quandong seeds and exploring his enclosure. His resilience and spirit touched everyone who cared for him.
A Christmas miracle
In December 2024, Bunji became an early Christmas gift for David Fleay Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast. On 12 December, he safely arrived at his new home, where he now proudly serves as a threatened species ambassador. He shares his new surroundings with an adult female cassowary, delighting visitors and raising awareness about cassowary conservation.
Thank you to our volunteers
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the C4 volunteers who dedicated countless hours to Bunji’s care at Garner’s Beach from June to December 2024. Your compassion and dedication made all the difference.
