As part of a new education partnership with Carey Baptist Grammar and their innovative Carey Zero program, students will work alongside C4 on coastal restoration projects along Wongaling Beach throughout 2025.
Each year, Carey brings its Year 10 students to Far North Queensland for an unforgettable experience connecting deeply with nature and community-led conservation, with their home-base right here in Wongaling Beach.
Coastal resilience
The focus of this year’s partnership is the restoration of vital coastal vegetation along the beachfront near the Carey Zero accommodation site. This section of the coast is more than just scenic, it plays a crucial role in:
- Protecting the shoreline from erosion and storm surges
- Buffering strong winds and tides
- Providing habitat and movement corridors for native wildlife — including the endangered Southern Cassowary
By strengthening this ecological frontline, students are actively contributing to the long-term resilience of our coast and community.
What’s involved?
Students will begin the day with a guided walk through the vegetation, learning about native species and the role they play in our ecosystem. Then, with gloves on and shovels in hand, they’ll help plant 150 native trees and shrubs — all carefully selected for this unique environment.
If your school is interested in offering students a similar opportunity — either locally or remotely — we’d love to collaborate.
