PROJECT UPDATE 25/6: We are providing the following update on the Village Green development, following concerns raised by a community member regarding the proposed ‘nature playground’ and its potential impact on established foreshore trees.
The concern specifically related to the location of the nature playground and the risk it may pose to significant trees within the site. These trees have been consistently identified throughout planning as features to be retained and protected.
In response, we contacted the RMS onsite project office to clarify the proposed location of the nature playground. On Wednesday 25 June, we received a copy of the current site plans; however, these did not indicate the exact placement of the playground. The project office confirmed that the significant trees will be retained, but could not confirm the specific site or layout for the nature-based play area.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council was notified of the concern at the same time. We were advised that a site inspection would be arranged. We have followed up with Council to confirm when this inspection will take place and intend to be present and take notes to report back to the community.
We have also raised concerns about visible damage to vegetation on the northern side of the site. This was discussed with representatives from RMS, who acknowledged the issue and agreed to follow up. Site workers were reminded that driving over tree roots can cause significant damage and that protective measures must be observed. Council has confirmed the matter has been reported and is being investigated.
We remain committed to ensuring that mature coastal vegetation is protected throughout the Village Green works and will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

PROJECT UPDATE 2/7:
The following landscape plan was provided by Council which shows the proposed nature playground. Internal discussions are being had as to moving the location of the nature playground so as not to disturb the vegetation on the foreshore.

In response to raised concerns, the Council has indicated:
- The area in question has already been disturbed and developed:
A stakeholder meeting held in November 2022 concluded that the area in question had been previously disturbed and developed. It included existing structures such as a substation, roads, and car parks. - The area in question has already been heavily colonised by weeds:
The site was heavily colonised by an invasive groundcover species, which had displaced native understorey plants. The intent of the works is to address this by reintroducing appropriate vegetation. - The design is intended to reduce erosion:
- The landscape design includes natural pathways aligned with existing foot traffic to reduce informal erosion and vegetation damage.
- The plan incorporates features such as public art to raise awareness of local fauna.
- Planting is scheduled with a defined species palette.
- The time for consultation has passed:
Community consultation occurred, including with local businesses and stakeholders. Feedback indicated an understanding that new recreational features would be located near the beachfront. - Regulatory approvals have been obtained:
All necessary development approvals have been obtained through the appropriate state regulatory agencies. - No revisions to the plans will be made:
No changes to the approved scope of works are proposed. However, there is a willingness to engage on the specific plant species to be used if concerns about appropriateness are raised.
Outcome: The project will proceed as approved; discussion is open only regarding the suitability of planting species.
