Join Clump Point Coastcare for our December working bee on Saturday December 5th from 8:00–9:00 am.
Clump Point is a remarkable part of the Wet Tropics, where volcanic soils meet the ocean. Its rich soils, high rainfall and maritime climate support unique ecosystems, including endangered littoral rainforest and kangaroo grassland. Clump Point is also significant to Djiru people. For more information about the Clump Point environment, see the Terrain NRM factsheet.
Clump Point Coastcare is a volunteer community group formed in 2025 to help care for these ecosystems on public land, working in partnership with CCRC, Djiru, C4 and ecological experts.
The group currently focuses on two sites:
- Littoral rainforest along the beachfront between C4 and Boyett Road, on the seaward side of the Arboretum. This area contains a number of weed species, including exotic palms, Syngonium, Singapore daisy and mother-in-law’s tongue, which the group is working to remove.
- Kangaroo grassland on the headland near the lookout. The grassland was originally dominated by native kangaroo grass and treeless, but is being taken over by guinea grass, Singapore daisy and several tree species. Coastcare is currently developing a restoration plan for the site.
Both locations are easy to see and provide important opportunities to demonstrate ecological restoration in action.
Come along on December 5
Clump Point Coastcare meets on the first Saturday of every month, except January, from 8:00–9:00 am.
Most Coastcare sessions involve manual weed removal, so come prepared for some practical work outdoors. Council provides insurance cover for volunteers when you sign in at the session, and the group works with Council where weed management needs are beyond what volunteers can tackle.
If you’re interested in joining, contact Tony O’Malley on Email: anthonytomswim@gmail.com or Phone: 0437 728 190
Everyone is welcome. Come along, meet the group and help care for one of Mission Beach’s most distinctive coastal environments.
