We’re excited to share that, with funding from Terrain NRM and their Green Connections Project (supported by the Queensland Government’s Natural Resource Management Expansion Program), we have begun the final stage of revegetation works at Gurrbum Nature Refuge, an important cassowary corridor linking lowland and upland rainforest habitat.
This latest stage of works will focus on Sites 6A and 6B, the final cleared areas remaining to be revegetated. Planting is expected to be completed later this year and will mark the end of seven years of community-led revegetation works at Gurrbum.
Over the coming months, we’ll be restoring approximately 0.76 hectares of former cleared land through the planting of more than 5,000 native rainforest seedlings, alongside ongoing maintenance and monitoring works.
Gurrbum Nature Refuge is a protected property within the Smiths Gap corridor, an important link between lowland and upland rainforest habitat for cassowaries and other native wildlife. While much of the property is rainforest, a small cleared area and access track remain from a former house site overlooking the surrounding forest.
The property was originally purchased through C4’s revolving land fund, supported over many years by contributions from our members, donors and broader community. Our long-term goal has always been to restore the cleared areas back to rainforest and eventually transition the property to a conservation-minded landholder who will continue to protect the site into the future.
Over the past seven years, volunteers, community members, Traditional Owners, project partners and local supporters have contributed thousands of hours helping restore former cleared areas back to rainforest.
