Project: Gurrbum Nature Refuge
The creation of the Gurrbum (Emerald Dove) Nature Reserve in Queensland is a landmark achievement in habitat conservation, marking a significant step toward protecting critical rainforest ecosystems.
In 2022, C4, in partnership with the Queensland Trust for Nature (QTFN), successfully purchased the land to safeguard it from development. This collaborative effort, supported by the local community, ensured that this vital habitat for the endangered southern cassowary and other native species would remain protected. The reserve was named after the emerald dove, or Gurrbum, a native bird emblematic of the region’s biodiversity.
Since securing the land, C4 and QTFN have been working to restore the rainforest habitat. More than 6,500 native trees and plant species have been planted, with efforts continuing to enhance the reserve’s ecological value.
Once fully revegetated, the Gurrbum Reserve will form a vital movement corridor for the endangered cassowary and other native species. This corridor will connect Japoon National Park, Tully Gorge National Park, and the Walter Hill Range Conservation Park, ensuring safe passage for wildlife and bolstering biodiversity across the region.
The Gurrbum Nature Reserve stands as a testament to our commitment to protecting Queensland’s unique ecosystems.
