Volunteers wanted to help protect turtles and shorebirds across the Cassowary Coast

CCRC is calling for community members interested in volunteering for a new environmental monitoring program focused on protecting shorebirds and sea turtles across the region’s coastline.

The program aims to establish a coordinated network of trained volunteers working across priority beaches and nesting areas throughout the Cassowary Coast.

Volunteers will assist by observing nesting activity, recording information and reporting signs of disturbance to help improve understanding of how turtles and shorebirds are using local coastal environments.

From nesting sea turtles to vulnerable beach-nesting birds like the beach stone-curlew and little tern, the Cassowary Coast supports an incredible diversity of coastal wildlife that relies on healthy and undisturbed beach habitats to survive.

The information collected through the program will help strengthen long-term conservation efforts and improve understanding of breeding activity, habitat use and threats across our region’s coastline.

Importantly, no prior experience is needed to get involved. Training and resources will be provided to volunteers, including guidance on how to safely identify and record turtle and shorebird activity without disturbing wildlife or nesting areas.

If you’ve been looking for a way to contribute to local conservation efforts, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and help care for some of our most important coastal environments and species.
