Mission Beach’s rainforests are some of the most unique and threatened in Australia — and they’re under pressure from invasive weeds. Thanks to funding and support from Terrain NRM and the Australian Government’s RDP Forest Resilience programme, multiple weed control projects are now underway in the Clump Point National Park and foreshore areas.
C4 is leading one of these projects, restoring critical lowland rainforest habitat at Boyett Road. We’re working closely with the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation, who are partnering with us on the Boyett Road site and leading further work along the Clump Point foreshore. Together, these efforts aim to curb the spread of invasive weeds and safeguard vital cassowary habitat.
The weed threat at Clump Point
Clump Point is home to two threatened rainforest types: lowland tropical rainforest and littoral (coastal) rainforest, both listed under the EPBC Act. Unfortunately, the area’s rich volcanic soils and high rainfall also make it a hotspot for weed invasion.

These invasive plants arrive mainly through garden escapees (plants brought in for landscaping that spread into the rainforest) or via seeds and fragments washed in from the sea. Once established, weeds can smother rainforest edges, outcompete native seedlings, and even collapse the canopy.
How you can help
Protecting Mission Beach’s rainforests requires everyone’s involvement. You can make a difference by:
- Choosing not to plant invasive species in your garden
- Disposing of garden waste responsibly at your local waste facility (dumping in rainforest is illegal)
- Learning how to identify and safely remove weeds (without harming native plants)
- Avoiding the clearing of native vegetation on public land
