Project: Wired for Wildlife
Wildlife entanglement in fencing is a significant issue, with research by wildlifefriendlyfences.org, supported by WWF, showing that 86% of animal entanglements occur on the top wire of barbed-wire fences.
To address this, C4 collaborated with Whites Group to create a wildlife-friendly fencing solution that effectively contains livestock while allowing safe passage for cassowaries and other native animals. The design uses a 1.6mm high-tensile wire, similar to traditional barbed wire, with smooth, non-barbed wire on the top and bottom strands and barbed wire only on the middle two strands.
In 2021, we successfully tested this fence on Courtney and Lisa Remilton’s property in Maria Creeks, led by our Habitat Coordinator, Ian Shankly. Now, Whites Group has invited C4 to introduce this fauna-friendly fencing to other properties across cassowary habitats.
