We are excited to announce a new partnership with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane to drive cassowary conservation awareness in the Far North. This exciting collaboration will see over 120 undergraduate media students take on a real-world conservation communications challenge: helping us inspire more people across Far North Queensland to report cassowary sightings for ongoing conservation.
The student’s challenge
Our cassowary sightings program now covers the entire Wet Tropics region, an area too vast for us to reach with traditional methods alone. We face significant barriers:
- Low media coverage in Far North Queensland
- Connectivity issues across the region
- The need to inspire action that lasts
QUT students have been tasked with solving these communication challenges in ways that drive lasting behaviour change. Their mission is to help C4:
- Keep the momentum going so sightings are consistently reported
- Get the attention of people who live in or travel through Cassowary Country
- Inspire them to report sightings using our online tool
Why it matters
Every cassowary sighting reported to C4 contributes to a bigger picture of how these endangered birds move, where they’re most at risk, and where urgent conservation action is needed. This data informs habitat protection, wildlife corridors, and safer driving campaigns which directly support the survival of cassowaries in the Wet Tropics.
