C4’s cassowary sightings program has expanded to cover the entire Wet Tropics region. With ongoing support from our Cairns-based partners, we’ve extended awareness efforts into the northern reaches of cassowary country and the response has been immediate.
Recent reports have come in from across the Tablelands, Cairns, and Cape Tribulation, assisting in the effort to build a clearer picture of cassowary presence across the broader landscape.
Why data matters
Every sighting reported to C4 feeds into a broader evidence base that directly supports cassowary protection efforts. The data is strategically shared with:
- Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) – to help inform planning scheme overlays and development assessment
- The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), to flag road strike hotspots and guide decisions about speed reductions
- Community members, to improve awareness of cassowary activity around roads and properties
