Cassowary Recovery Plan Nears Approval

We are excited to share that the updated Cassowary Recovery Plan, initially drafted in 2022, is now a step closer to approval by the Queensland State Government! This plan represents a significant step forward in securing a brighter, safer future for Southern Cassowaries in our region.

What is the Cassowary Recovery Plan?

The Cassowary Recovery Plan is a comprehensive framework designed to protect and enhance cassowary populations across Queensland. Developed through collaboration among government agencies, scientists, conservationists, and local communities—including strong input from C4—the plan outlines essential actions to address threats to cassowaries and improve their habitat.

Key elements:

  • Habitat Protection: Strengthening laws and regulations to safeguard critical cassowary habitats from development and fragmentation.
  • Road Safety Measures: Implementing better road signage, wildlife crossings, and community education campaigns to reduce vehicle strikes.
  • Community Engagement and Education: Expanding outreach programmes to educate residents and visitors on how to live harmoniously with cassowaries, reducing human-cassowary conflicts.
  • Research and Monitoring: Enhancing research efforts to better understand cassowary behaviour, population dynamics, and threats.
  • Emergency Response: Strengthening the response network for injured or displaced cassowaries, including improving rehabilitation facilities like Garner’s Beach.

C4’s role:

C4 has been involved in shaping this plan from the start, and commitment remains as we prepare to action critical elements of the plan:

  • Habitat Restoration: C4 will continue leading community-driven reforestation projects, focusing on creating wildlife corridors essential for cassowary movement.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: We will expand our educational programmes in schools and community groups, promoting responsible behaviours around cassowaries.
  • Active Rehabilitation Efforts: We remain dedicated to caring for injured or orphaned cassowaries, playing a vital role in their rehabilitation and release back into the wild.
